Catalyst Science Discovery Centre: The Net Zero game
Between 14th and 19th February, visitors to Catalyst Science and Discovery Centre can play the Net Zero game in an interactive gallery. This fun, interactive game, developed in collaboration with the North-West Hydrogen Alliance, is about making choices to de-carbonise our homes, industry and infrastructure with Hydrogen as a key component.
The Net Zero game allows the visitor to investigate a virtual world and explore the potential benefits of carbon capture technology, the use of hydrogen energy and solar or wind to replace our reliance on fossil fuels. The timed components in the game give a sense of urgency and a better understanding of why we need to respond to the climate emergency with immediate effect and the focus for the game is to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Alongside the Net Zero game, visitors can learn more about making, storing and using hydrogen and can even launch a mini hydrogen rocket in our interactive gallery.
Catalyst is open during Hydrogen Week from 10am – 5pm from Tuesday 14th to Sunday 19th February.

About Catalyst
As a charitable trust, Catalyst is the only science centre and museum in the UK dedicated to the science and technology behind the chemicals industry and its impact on our lives, past, present and future. Based in a Grade II listed building in Widnes, where the chemical industry flourished for over 170 years, Catalyst holds a unique position as a museum, a national industrial archive, an education resource and a tourist attraction.
It began as a research project in 1982 to commemorate the centenary of the Society of the Chemical Industry and by 1986 Catalyst had moved to its present location and opened a new rooftop, glass-walled Observatory Gallery. The interactive gallery on the ground floor was opened in 1991 and in 1996 the historical, Birth of an Industry gallery was opened along with a purpose built education centre and reception area. A laboratory and theatre were added in 2006.
In 2018, Catalyst embarked on a comprehensive refurbishment programme with funding from UKRI /Wellcome Trust’s Inspiring Science Fund. This incorporated a complete re-branding, a new reception, café and shop area, a new archive room, refurbished theatre and education studios, a Covid secure courtyard area and a complete refurbishment of the interactive gallery with brand new exhibits.
Through this range of interactive exhibits, hands-on workshops, entertaining science shows and historical archives, we’ve been inspiring and educating people of all ages for over 30 years!
