Riverside College: Hydrogen Training Centre
Riverside College is delighted to be formally opening a new Hydrogen Training Centre on 1st March 2024 as part of the celebrations for National Hydrogen Week.
The area of hydrogen has the potential to become a large new skills demand for the Liverpool City Region, through new revenue, infrastructure, maintenance jobs, planning and awareness. LCR Combined Authority’s own decarbonisation pathway forecasts that hydrogen will meet more than 20 per cent of net zero demand by 2040, primarily supporting energy-intensive foundation industries and logistics operations. We are delighted that our Hydrogen Project has enabled us to build a bespoke Hydrogen Training Centre and to write four new qualifications, each created in conjunction with employers to ensure they meet their specific needs within this complex and evolving area.
Hydrogen is a new and evolving sector, and as such, barriers are often around a lack of curriculum knowledge, a lack of curriculum availability and a lack of industry grade equipment. Our work through the Strategic Development Fund supported by the Department of Education, has allowed us to access funding to upskill existing staff, bring in consultancy expertise, create new curriculum to benefit employers and the wider Liverpool City Region population through training & retraining as well as create industry standard equipment. All of these areas would have otherwise acted as barriers or dis-incentives to reacting so proactively to current and future employer skills needs.
Several employers have supported us throughout the project to design and develop the curriculum and training centre to meet their current and future needs. Companies involved in our project are Cadent, United Living, Intergen, Jet and various local advanced manufacturing companies. All of these companies are sighted within the Liverpool City Region and Local Skills Improvement Plan as priority skills needs. Many of these companies have generously donated time and equipment to ensure our products are fit for purpose and meet local needs and we are thankful for their input.
